KhaanaKya Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 October 2026
KhaanaKya helps your household decide what to cook. This policy explains what the app does with your information on iPhone and Android. In short: what you write stays on your phone. The app sends anonymous usage and crash reports so we can see what helps, and you can turn that off in Settings. Some ingredients link to Amazon, and we may earn a commission if you buy through those links.
What we collect
KhaanaKya has no accounts, no sign-in and no ads, and it doesn't track you across other apps or websites. It collects only the following, and only while Share anonymous usage is on in the app's Settings. It's on by default.
- How the app is used: when the app is opened, which of its screens you visit, and actions such as starting a pick, choosing a filter, whether a search found something, adding or removing a dish from your menu, opening a recipe, and tapping an ingredient to shop for it. These are sent as fixed categories, for example "filter: cuisine, South Indian" or "search found: yes". When you tap an ingredient to shop, the app sends which of its built-in Cookbook dishes and ingredients it was, for example "Curd Rice, curry leaves".
- Crash reports: where in the app's code a crash happened, with the app version, device model and system version. Error messages are removed before sending.
- Survey answers: the app may occasionally ask a short question with set answers or a rating. Answering is optional.
- Technical details sent with each of the above: a random ID created when the app is first opened, the app version, device model, system version, language, time zone and screen size.
Never sent: dishes you add yourself, ingredients you type, search words, notes, links, photos or anything else you type or add. The only dish and ingredient names ever sent are the app's built-in ones, and only when you tap an ingredient to shop. The random ID isn't linked to your name, email, phone number or any other account, and your IP address isn't stored.
Who processes it
Usage data and crash reports go to PostHog, the analytics service we use, on its servers in the United States. The app also downloads its settings from PostHog, for example whether a survey is running or a feature is switched on. When it does, PostHog records which setting you were given, so we can compare how features work. We use the data only to understand and improve KhaanaKya. We don't sell it, share it with advertisers or use it to show you ads. We keep it only as long as it helps us improve the app.
Your choice
Turn off Share anonymous usage in the app's Settings and the app stops sending anything to PostHog. It doesn't contact PostHog at all while the switch is off, and features use their built-in settings instead. Crashes that happen while it's off are never sent, even if you turn it back on later.
What stays on your device
Your diet preference, chosen kitchens, menu, dishes you add, notes, photos you attach to a dish and app settings are stored only on your device. Deleting the app deletes them. If your phone backs up apps (iCloud or Google backup), this data may be included in that backup under Apple's or Google's own privacy terms.
Recipe links
If you paste or share a recipe link (for example a YouTube video), the app connects directly to that website to show the page's title and picture. That website sees an ordinary request from your phone, like opening the link in a browser, and its own privacy policy applies. Looking up a recipe opens a search on YouTube or Instagram in your browser or their app.
Shopping links (Amazon)
On a Cookbook dish, tapping an ingredient opens an Amazon.in grocery search for it in your browser or the Amazon app. The link contains only the ingredient's name and our Amazon Associates tag. The app passes nothing else about you to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, KhaanaKya earns from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Amazon may use cookies to credit the purchase to us, and Amazon's privacy notice applies to anything you do on Amazon. Ingredients on dishes you add yourself are never linked.
Photos
When you add a photo to a dish, you pick it with the system photo picker. The app only receives the photo you choose, and it stays on your device.
Meal reminders
If you turn on reminders, the app schedules them on your phone and suggests dishes from your own menu and lists. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else to create a reminder. The app asks for permission to show notifications, and you can change reminder times or turn them off in the app's Settings. While Share anonymous usage is on, the app records that a reminder setting changed or a reminder was opened, as described above, but never which dishes it suggested.
Children
KhaanaKya isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The anonymous usage data described above can't identify a person.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above.
